Time Saver, Like a dish washer!
Get one! I’m a single father with 3 kids and a Labrador. Vacuuming is a daily never ending, always behind Chore in our house. We aren’t Lazy just busy. I jumped on Amazon one Friday after work and decided it was time to give one a try. I decided on the Shark as it’s bagless and had great reviews. Some claiming it better then the higher priced Roomba brands. It arrived the next day being a Saturday. Awesome!I was surprised how quiet and gentle this vacuum is. Our home is all hard surfaces. It moves around chairs and over room transitions with 4x4 skill. I actually thought I’d need to level out a higher room transition of flooring as it’s unfinished 1/2” thick laminate. It climbs over like nothing! Thick kitchen mats same thing. (Photo) No issues! I’m amazed how straight it runs down long halls and works around objects like dinning chairs. It’s so cool to watch.Setup via the App on Iphone12 was difficult for me. I jumped online instead created a account then connected with the app once my account was in place. That seemed to work just fine. I then connected it to our homes Google system. Although I had to search the internet for help with that. It does work now. I can send the shark on cleaning runs using Google home. Cool. It’s now been a week running everyday starting at 9am while I’m a work. It takes a full day to complete a run on our 1300 sqft area. It has gotten stuck a couple times on cords or under my bed. We are starting to learn what to pickup or move to help it along. It is becoming more efficient at learning the layout. Mapping now setup via the app. I have selected and labeled rooms. My sons room I decided to use the “No go” supplied tape at his door.(photo) He is young and it’s just to much to keep small toys and socks off the floor. The Tape sits on the laminate without adhesive. I tucked it under the rooms transition and it’s holding up fine.I don’t have much to not like about it at this time. It could be better at avoiding shoes or random objects in the middle of the room. But that requires a jump in technology and price. Possibly updating the App to allow the vacuum to run more then once in a selected room per day? I would like my living room cleaned twice as often. Doing so on a auto schedule would be great. Although it can be done manually now. So no big deal.

I've owned robot vacuums for as long as I can remember. I used to have 2 very large German Shephard dogs who shed constantly, year round so vacuuming was a daily necessity. My original iRobot did the job just fine but it was getting old, didn't hold a charge anymore and tended to get stuck a lot. I read the reviews about the Shark IQ Robot and bought 2 (upstairs and downstairs). I am stunned at how far the technology has come.

Before the IQ Robot Self-Empty Vacuum I would have hesitated in recommending these tools. You have to empty the very small onboard dust container often and if you forgot then it didn't pick up anymore. Hair would get in the rollers. Wires would jam the wheels. Sometimes it would fall down the stairs. Needed to buy directional driving wheel every six months because they get used up. Same with the brushes which wear down rapidly.

But this Shark IQ is a totally different beast. I just love that it empties itself at the base so it's always ready to go. The navigation of the robot is brilliant... it's not a random pattern until eventually it would cover all the area (like the iRobot), it's a systematic approach to floor sweeping. It likes to go on a long stretch, then moves about 6 inches to the right and then continues it's long stretch in the opposite direction. When facing obstacles, you can see the IQ at work as it methodically goes around the obstacle while remembering where it left off it's long stretch course and then resumes once the obstacle is clear. The logic programming is so good that no inch of my floor goes un-vacuumed. This model comes with two brushes in the front instead of the single brush on my previous model. Also the brushes do not rotate at fast speed, they are rather slow and that is by design. You don't want the brushes to throw debris in every direction, instead it gently and slowly pushes side debris into the path of the robot for pick-up.

The mapping feature is new to me and it does an excellent job. With the Shark app for your smart phone, once mapping is complete, you can tell the robot to only clean certain rooms or areas. You can also designate certain rooms or areas as no-go areas so no need for blocking certain paths with invisible walls (although it does come with a roll of magnetic strip should you wish to block off an area the old fashion way).

The app is terrible, almost an after thought. If you try to create an account using the app, a bug will prevent you from logging in and you will be stuck in this cycle of password resets. Instead, use your PC, create an account on the Shark website THEN use this account name and password into your Shark app on your phone and it will work. If you have multiple IQ Robots they will all appear in this app but it is tedious to move from one vacuum to another. Also wished there was a feature to add users instead of providing my credentials to everyone in my household. Way too many notifications to turn on this or that feature... I said "no" already so stop with the notifications! So... yes, crappy app but incredibly efficient vacuum robot.

Highly recommend this model, especially for hard wood floors. I can also certify that this particular model is "mom-approved"... that's a rare prize indeed for any technology in my household. But like all things, do shop around as prices vary greatly from one location to another and consider all purchasing options carefully (shipping, extras, warranty, etc.).

I waited a week of running daily cleaning before posting this review. It's a neat little vacuum. I don't find it that noisy, but it's not something you want to run overnight. For one thing, it needs a well lit place to function. It won't work well in the dark. First time you launch it, it will look confused as it maps the place. Returning to the dock on its own will take a while the first time, but don't help it. Let it learn. Mine has become confused as it ventured into unknown parts of the house. However, it got better over time as it memorized the floor plan. You have to give it a few days to discover the whole floor, draw a map and then it gets smarter. Also, give it time to update its firmware before launching a cleaning cycle. It is very obsessed about reaching every square inch of the floor so if you have a dining table with chairs, it will spend time to find its way around the legs to reach everything it can. It may look confused at times, but let it do its thing. On its first run, it picked up a surprising amount of stuff. I really like that it has a canister to empty instead of a bag that you have to replace. Make sure to pick stuff up from the floor (i.e. cat/dog toys, socks/shoes, lose cables, etc) so it doesn't get stuck on things. The main thing is don't disrupt it! Let it move on its own to learn the floor plan.

Where you choose to have the dock/base, make sure it is a permanent spot. The Shark will map the floor from that starting point. If you move the dock, then erase the map and let it learn again.

After about 3 cleanings, it has surveyd the entire main floor and it can now return to dock without problems. I followed it around to determine the best places to put pieces of boundary lines like for shoe trays so it doesn't climb over them. I put a piece of boundary line under the edge of the tray, it works and you can't see it. It's only been a week, but I've seen it go cleaning then later head to the dock to empty its bin and then resume. Awesome!! The main reason why I bought this unit with a dock!

So far, it can clean the whole main floor in 1.5 hours on one battery charge. Return once to the dock to empty its bin. It barely has any battery left after the full clean, but it does the whole foor. Charge time is slow, though. In all, very happy with the purchase. Considering getting a 2nd one for upstairs.

UPDATE: It took a little over a week of daily cleaning to have the main floor fully mapped and now I can divide the floor into rooms. From there, I can launch the Shark to only clean specific rooms which is neat. However, you can only define the rooms in the app which is a MAJOR PAIN TO USE!! If you have fat fingers using a phone screen, it's just a major pain to drag the little squares to form the rooms. And it doesn't work well 75% of the time. Took me way too long to set the rooms. I wish there was a way to do this on a web site, using a computer and a mouse, but no. You have to use your phone and the app sucks at it. So be warned, you'll have this process, but it's a one-off.
