- taken without preparation
New SAT: 1560 (out of 1600)
- Reading and Writing: 770 (out of 800)
- Math: 790 (out of 800)
- taken without preparation
I am a private tutor with over four years of experience. Throughout these years, I have instructed students in all primary and secondary grade levels. I have taught first- and second-year college students, those as young as 4 years old, and working adults; my oldest student is a cheerful lady in her fifties.
My approach to teaching English focuses on helping my students build a powerful vocabulary, a vocabulary that gives them an edge not just in school, but also in their personal lives. As most linguists conclude, there is a clear correlation between a student's vocabulary and his or her academic achievement. This finding is not surprising: our ideas have consequences, and since we communicate our ideas with our words, our words have consequences. By learning the words they are expected to know and how to use them, my students achieve higher scores on standardized tests (e.g., SAT and IELTS) and thrive in their classes. In addition, they become more sophisticated thinkers and better communicators. With the words at their command, they express their thoughts with cogency, earning them the admiration of their classmates and teachers.
I also teach academic writing, with an emphasis on achieving clarity and coherence. These two characteristics constitute the cornerstone that embodies the essence of persuasive essays. Some teachers criticize their students for being unclear and incoherent in their writing, yet these teachers often offer little advice on how to improve. There are principles that students should observe if they wish to be understood by their readers, and I teach them what these principles are. With diligent practice, they reap the fruits of their labour, seeing their school essays going from 4 out of 6 to 5, 5.5, or 6 out of 6 under the BC Curriculum.
If you would like to know more about me, please reach me via email. I communicate in English and Mandarin. It will be my pleasure to address your questions.
