Canucks head for Beantown just one win away from Stanley Cup
By Elliott Pap, Vancouver Sun June 11, 2011 7:30 PM
VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Canucks received a heroes' sendoff at YVR on Saturday and one of their heroes from Friday's Game 5 victory, centre Maxim Lapierre, was trying to keep his feet on the ground.
It was difficult, he admitted, getting a good night's sleep after his third-period goal proved to be the winner in Vancouver's dramatic 1-0 triumph over the Boston Bruins, moving the Canucks to within a single win of the Stanley Cup championship. Vancouver leads the best-of-seven series 3-2 with Game 6 going Monday (5 p.m., Team 1040, CBC) in Beantown.
“It was a little bit tough to sleep,” Lapierre said with a smile while excited Canuck fans chanted his name a few feet away. “It wasn't because of the goal but because of the chance we have on Monday to win the Stanley Cup. I mean, it's going to be hard. Boston is going to come pretty hard at home and we're going to have to be ready for the challenge,”
Lapierre, who only joined the Canucks at the NHL trading deadline, wasn't about to take sole credit for being the difference maker in Friday's win. He scored the goal at one end and netminder Roberto Luongo didn't allow any at the other and that was the ballgame.
Asked if he felt like a hero, Lapierre noted the entire team performed heroically.
“Everybody did good [Friday night],” he said. “I would not have had the chance to score that goal unless everybody played that way. Did we celebrate last night? Not really. We'll celebrate when it's time to celebrate. Sure it's fun to see all these people at the airport but we haven't won anything yet.”
Canuck head coach Alain Vigneault would barely allow himself a smile Saturday morning despite the shrieking and hollering that greeted his arrival at the airport. Now 50, Vigneault has spent his lifetime in professional hockey and is one victory away from claiming the ultimate prize.
“You know what?” he responded when asked about his emotions. “Right now, I am trying to come up with a plan for the next game like I've done all year long, We have a very mature group, a group that set out in the beginning of training camp to win the Stanley Cup. We weren't shy about talking about what our goals were and now we've got an opportuity on Monday to achieve that goal. Until that's done, everyone is really focused on the task at hand.”
Right-winger Jannik Hansen says he and his teammates are very aware of the daunting task facing them in Boston. The Canucks were humbled 8-1 and 4-0 in their first two attempts in the TD Garden and the Bruins' home rink figures to be even more hostile on Monday.
The Bruins are 9-3 on home-ice in these playoffs and have won five straight in their building.
“We know there is still a long way to go before we can take anything for granted,” Hansen said. “We definitely didn't play our game, or the way we'd like to play in those first two games there. We've been a good road team all year and through the playoffs but, for some reason, we didn't find our game there.”
Captain Henrik Sedin thinks the team is prepared for the challenge.
“It's a chance to finish off a Stanley Cup Final and we have to make the most of it,” he said. “We have to go in there and play the way we did here at home. We can't listen to the crowd, or let their players get any momentum from the crowd. It's going to be a tough task. You know you're close but, again, we know it's going to be really tough. They're a win away from getting it to Game 7.”
The Canucks are up in the series despite no points from Henrik and just six goals in five games. Two of their victories have been by the slimmest of 1-0 margins. Henrik wouldn't mind more offence but he isn't fretting about it as long as the team is discovering other avenues to victory.
“I am little bit surprised [by the lack of offence] because a lot of times you're not going to win games by scoring six goals in five games,” Henrik said. “Again, we're confident playing in any situation. We can win games 1-0 and if we need to score more we can. It's going to be tough if we continue to score one goal a game but if that's what it takes, we're fine.”

肯定打第7场了,客场真是烂的没法看,完全一边倒的被动。看来还是要靠主场风水保佑,最后一场我不出去看了,怕到时候暴乱。

Is Luongo past his prime?? :( Looking back, he got outplayed by every goaltender in the opposing team during the playoffs....
The interesting part is: he still has a few years left in him. Can he maintain the #1 on his back until retirement? Or will Schneider take over soon?
