He was cremated and the ashes buried some weeks later. There was a memorial service for him at a church we both went to here philosophical and ethical questions are studied and discussed. At the ceremony several of us said something about David. I notice that I still have what I said on the computer so I have printed out a copy and enclose it.

David was a difficult personality with few friends and who quarrelled often with people. Some of us felt we only got to know him at the memorial service after he was dead. In large measure his isolation was due, I think, to his parents having been divorced when he was a child and he grew up mainly in boarding schools without his parents.

At the ceremony we also read a beautiful poem he had written in China, called “ Human Ties “, and I think it was in China that he felt happiest, perhaps because he felt he was doing useful work there, and was appreciated.

If you come near Montreal next year, we could meet and I would like to hear something of his stay in China. I was happy to receive your letter and know that somebody else remembered David.

    Sincerely,

    Donald Patterson
