David spent several years living in our house; we were good friends, yet I can’t say that we were close friends or that I really knew him. If that is a failure, the fault probably lies in both of us. Another friend of David’s was Horst Richter whom some may know from his participation in David’s series here: The Critical Spirit. When horst and I talked over the phone a few hours actually after David’s death, he, after some time, compared David to a “hermit crab”. I think this was an apt analogy, in that this animal is isolated from the world by a shell which it finds and puts on to protect itself.

Finally, David was a faithful participator in the group here called Science and the Search for Meaning. The first book we read was “ The mind of God” by Paul Davies from which Serge read the final paragraph. I think that David was content with the tentative faith expressed by Paul Davies, arrived at by science and reason, and I would agree with him.

(to be continued)
